I still remember the anticipation of getting my very first paycheck as a teenager. It was the summer of 1982, and I was working at a daycare center earning $3.35 an hour. I had just finished my second week of work, and in my mind I’d already calculated what my check would be—$134 for one week of pay.
The daycare was near my house, so on my lunch break, I literally ran home to grab the mail to retrieve my very first paycheck. I remember the big smile on my face as I opened the envelope—only for that smile to disappear seconds later. Instead of the $134 I expected, the check was for $123.28. I was confused because, as a full-time student, I knew I was exempt from federal and state taxes. So why was money missing?
That’s when I saw it: $10.72 deducted for something called FICA—what we now call Social Security. My first reaction, out loud, was: “What is FICA?” I rushed back to work and asked my manager what FICA is and why my hard-earned money was taken out of my check to pay for it. She gave me a brief explanation—and the bottom line was this: if you earn a paycheck, you pay FICA. Period.
After that moment, I never really thought much about FICA or Social Security again—not until recently. Now that I’m just a couple of years away from being eligible to apply for benefits, I realized my understanding today isn’t much better than it was back then.
But this time, I’m not going in clueless. I have a resource that breaks everything down in plain language: Social Security FOR YOU by Zach Thornton—and it has helped me tremendously. Instead of trying to piece together confusing information from government websites or relying on outdated advice, this book simplifies what really matters. It explains the different types of benefits, when and how to claim them, and how your decisions today can affect your monthly payments for the rest of your life.
What I appreciate most is that it doesn’t talk over your head. There’s no jargon, no fear tactics, and no overwhelm—just clear guidance, real-life examples, and step-by-step explanations. It answered questions I didn’t even know I should be asking, and it gave me a level of confidence I’ve never had when it comes to applying for my Social Security benefits.
And the best part? You don’t have to be close to retirement to benefit from it. Whether you’re planning ahead, already collecting, supporting aging loved ones, or simply trying to understand what you’ve been paying into all these years, this book meets you right where you are.
If you’re anything like me and just want straight answers without the overwhelm, here are some of the key areas this book breaks down:
- Still working and years away from retirement
- Approaching 62 and thinking about when to apply
- Already receiving benefits and trying to make sense of the rules
- Caring for a spouse, aging parent, or disabled family member
- Advising others as a caregiver, advocate, or financial professional
…this book is designed to help you understand how Social Security really works and how to make the most of it.
I can now laugh at that teenage version of me who ran home expecting $134 and had no idea what FICA (Social Security) was. But the truth is, many of us are still in the dark about Social Security—even after decades of paying into it. The difference now is, I don’t have to stay confused, and neither do you.
I’m finally taking the time to understand what I’ve earned, what I qualify for, and how to make the most of it—and this book has been a game changer in that process. Whether you’re five months or fifteen years away from collecting, there’s power in being prepared instead of surprised.
So don’t wait until it’s time to file or until someone else has to figure it out for you. Make it easier on your future self.
