Honoring the Mother in Every Woman: Protecting Your Peace & Energy After 50

We often pause to celebrate mothers in May, but this year, let’s go deeper. Let’s honor the women who’ve given birth and every woman who has nurtured, guided, mentored, or stood in the gap for someone else. Whether you’re a mom, aunt, teacher, big sister, caregiver, or friend, your nurturing spirit matters — and protecting your own peace and energy is one of the greatest ways to honor yourself.

In this article, I explain why protecting your peace and energy matters and offer a few simple ways to do it.

Why Protecting Peace Matters More Than Ever After 50

After 50, protecting our peace becomes not just helpful—it becomes vital to our health and well-being. For many of us, we’ve spent decades being everything to everybody. But what happens when our cup runs dry?

Let’s explore why peace is your power and how you can reclaim it at this beautiful stage of life.

Scientific studies have shown that chronic stress contributes to everything from heart disease to weakened immunity. But beyond the research, we feel it. Constantly being “on,” available, and holding space for others is heavy. And if we’re not careful, it will cost us more than we realize.

What’s Draining Your Energy?

Many of us over 50 are still carrying multiple roles:

  • We’re caring for grandchildren or aging parents.
  • We’re still working—or maybe starting something new.
  • We’re often the emotional anchor in our families or friend circles.

And then there’s the outside noise—constant news cycles, social injustice, political chaos, financial worries. Even when trying to mind your business, the world will immediately knock at your door.

All of this noise pulls us away from ourselves. If we don’t actively protect our peace, we run on empty.

Practical & Holistic Ways to Protect Your Peace

Here are a few simple but powerful ways to reclaim your energy and center yourself:

1. Set Boundaries Without Guilt

You don’t have to explain your “no.” Your time, energy, and attention are precious resources. Guard them like gold.

2. Create a Daily Peace Practice

This can be prayer, meditation, quiet journaling, or tea time in silence. I love starting my mornings with movement, gratitude journaling, meditation, and prayer. How you begin your day often determines how the rest of it flows.

3. Let Go of the Need to “Fix” Everyone

Whew—this one was hard for me. But I’ve learned that carrying everyone’s pain is not love—it’s a trauma pattern. You can hold space without holding the whole burden. It’s okay to say, “That’s not mine to fix.”

4. Turn Off the Noise

Take social media breaks, unfollow accounts that drain your spirit, and protect your mind the way you protect your home—keep the wrong energy out.

5. Move for Peace, Not Punishment

I love taking long walks or other forms of moving my body, it’s become a sacred ritual.

6. Listen to Audiobooks While Moving

Reading is fantastic, but audiobooks have become my go-to! I listen to inspirational books while walking, running errands, cooking, or washing dishes. It turns everyday moments into peaceful retreats.

7. Make a Peaceful Space at Home

Designate a cozy corner with candles, soft pillows, or plants. Let it be your escape—even if it’s just for 10 minutes a day.

8. Make Time for Stillness

Doing “nothing” is doing something. Schedule time to simply sit and breathe. No phone, no to-do list, just you and your breath.

9. Create Your Own Personal Paint & Sip Sanctuary

If you’re looking for a peaceful, creative way to relax, start your solo paint-and-sip session at home.

Here’s how it works:

  • Grab a blank canvas, some paintbrushes, and acrylic paint. Affordable supplies are available at craft stores, dollar stores, or on Amazon.
  • Set the mood: light a candle, choose a calming playlist, and pour yourself a drink—a warm cup of tea, a refreshing mocktail, or your favorite glass of wine.
  • If you’re not sure where to start, try a paint-by-number kit. It takes the pressure off, allowing you to relax and enjoy the process without worrying about the outcome.

A Loving Reminder to Every Woman

Whether you’re a mother, auntie, teacher, or friend—you are worthy of rest. You are worthy of peace. And you are allowed to say, “This space, this moment, this breath—is mine.”

This May, I challenge you to nurture yourself as deeply as you nurture others. Protect your energy. Choose your joy. Return to yourself.

I love to hear from you, in the comment section, let me know how you protect your peace and energy.
